Victory Birdseye

Victory Birdseye (* December 25, 1782 in Cornwall, Connecticut, † September 16, 1853 in Pompey, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. He represented 1815-1817 and 1841-1843 the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Victory Birdseye was born during the Revolutionary War in Cornwall. He attended public schools and graduated in 1804 from Williams College in Williamstown (Massachusetts ). Then he studied law. His admission to the bar he received in 1807 and then began in Pompey Hill in Onondaga County to practice.

Politically he belonged at that time to the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1814 for the 14th Congress Birdseye was in the 19th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of James Geddes on March 4, 1815. Since he gave up for reelection in 1816, he retired after the March 3, 1817 out of the Congress.

Between 1817 and 1838 he held the post of postmaster at Pompey Hill. In addition, he was 1818-1833 District Attorney in Onondaga County and 1818-1822 Master of the Chancery of Onondaga County. As a delegate, he took in 1821 at the Constitutional Convention of New York. He sat 1823 and 1838-1840 in the New York State Assembly. He was also a 1827 member of the senate of New York.

In 1838 he ran unsuccessfully for the 26th Congress. His political affiliation changed during this period of the Whig party. In the congressional elections of 1840 for the 27th Congress Birdseye was elected in 23 electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of Nehemiah H. Earll and Edward Rogers on March 4, 1841 which together before the district had represented in the U.S. House of Representatives. Since he gave up for reelection in 1842, he retired after the March 3, 1843 out of the Congress.

After his conference time he went back to his work as a lawyer after. He died on September 16, 1853 in Pompey, and was then buried in Pompey Hill Cemetery. His great-grandson Clarence Birdseye developed the process for frozen food ( freezing food) and was the founder of Birds Eye Frozen Foods.
