Vikartovce

Vikartovce ( German Weigsdorf or Vistula village, Hungarian Hernádfő - to 1907 Vikartóc ) is a town in eastern Slovakia, with 1858 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is a part of the Okres Poprad, which belongs to the district Prešov Region.

Geography

The traditional landscape Zips belonging to municipality is located in the upper valley of Hornád, only a few kilometers away from the source. North of Vikartovce is the mountain range Kozie chrbty, with its highest peak, the Kozi kameň ( 1255 m nm) above the village, while to the south lies the promontory and the main ridge of the Low Tatras. Located northwest of the town center river basins meet three major rivers of Central Europe: the Danube, Tisza and the Vistula. Vikartovce is located 17 km from Poprad.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1283 as Villa Wykardi writing and belonged to the monastery Spišský Štiavnik. Since she was completely depopulated in the 15th century, moved one of Wallachian settlers. In addition to the sheep and cattle, the villagers were engaged Agriculture, Forestry and weaving. To date, the place is known mostly for agricultural purposes. In 1828 the town had 183 houses and 1,329 inhabitants.

After the Second World War came out of many residents to settle the surrounding places instead of the Germans, who have been recently sold.
