Ville-la-Grand

Ville- la-Grand is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Ville- la- Grand is located at 444 m above sea level. M., about 1 km northeast of Annemasse and 8 km east of the city of Geneva (air line). The village extends into the Talniederung of Foron, on the outskirts of Annemasse, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​4.49 km ² municipal area includes a section at the bottom Arve Valley. The area is crossed from east to west from Foron (tributary of the Arve ) in a valley that has a 300 m wide flat valley floor and usually about 30 m is cut into the plateau around. History

The territory of Ville- la-Grand was already inhabited during the Roman period. Here was the Roman farm villa magna, which gave the place its present name. In the Middle Ages Ville- la-Grand was the center of a small rule. As the place in the border area of ​​the dominions of the Counts of Geneva and Savoy was, he changed hands several times. During the conquest campaign of Berner ( 1536) and during the Savoyerkrieges ( 1592), the village was affected.

Attractions

The church of Saint - Mammes, originally built in Romanesque style, was given its present form at conversions in the 19th century. From the early 18th century, the present building dates back to the Château de Marsaz.

With 8083 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Ville- la-Grand is one of the larger towns in the Haute-Savoie region. Significant growth rates with respect to the number of inhabitants were recorded mainly during the 1960s and 1980s. Today, the settlement area is completely conjoined with that of Annemasse and Ambilly.
