Vladimir Tukmakov

Volodymyr Tukmakow ( Ukr Володимир Тукмаков; . Engl Vladimir Tukmakov ) ( born March 5, 1946 in Odessa) is a Ukrainian grandmaster in chess.

In the years 1970, 1972 and 1983 Volodymyr Tukmakow was runner-up of the USSR Championships respectively. In 1984, he won the Soviet team gold medal at the Chess Olympiad in Thessaloniki. In the same year he played in the USSR compared fight against the rest of the world on board three or four behind Anatoly Karpov and Garry Kasparov and Lew Polugajewski.

To Tukmakows best results in international tournaments include the single second places in 1970 in Buenos Aires behind Bobby Fischer and Karpov in 1973 in Madrid behind. Tukmakow won the tournament in Amsterdam ( shared with Borislav Ivkov and Vlastimil Jansa ), 1977 in Decin, 1978, the tournaments of Vilnius and Las Palmas ( shared with Gyula Sax ) 1974. In 1984 he was in the tradition of Tilburg tournament second behind Tony Miles and won the Open in 1985 of Lugano, at that time one of the most open tournaments, participated in the first ever Soviet chess player.

Currently, Volodymyr Tukmakow coach of the Ukrainian team, which he led to a gold medal in Calvia and 2010 in Khanty-Mansiysk Chess Olympiad in 2004. Since 2004, he has the title FIDE Senior Trainer.

His current Elo rating is 2547 (as of September 2010).

When asked about his most memorable game Tukmakow gave the match against Viktor Korchnoi, played in 1970, in the fourth round of the USSR Championship in Riga.
