Alexander Onischuk

Alexander Onischuk (Ukrainian Олександр Оніщук; transcription Olexandr Vasilyevich Onishchuk; born September 3, 1975 in Sevastopol ) is an American chess player of Ukrainian descent.

Achievements

In the U16 World Cup in 1991 in Guarapava, Brazil, he finished second. In 1993, he was at the Junior World Championships U20 in Kozhikode Fourth ( and became International Champion), 1995 in Halle ( Saale) tied second behind Roman Slobodjan. In between, in 1994, he was awarded the grandmaster title. In the World Team Championships in 1997 in Lucerne, he was awarded a gold medal for his score of 4.5 out of 7 on the second board of the Ukraine, before Pyotr Svidler and Michael Adams. Master of the United States, he was in 2006. At the U.S. Championships in 2007, he finished second behind Alexander Shabalov. In the same year he was able to win second behind Dmitri Yakovenko, which he had in 2002 already in the Russian Poikowski the Karpov Tournament ( category 17 ). Onischuk has won in his career more than 20 international tournaments.

His current Elo rating is 2672 (as of November 2009), that he is behind Hikaru Nakamura and Gata Kamsky in third place of the U.S. Elo ranking. His previous highest Elo rating was 2699 July-October 2009.

Commitment

His chess skills are also in demand for world championship matches. He was seconded in 1997 Anatoly Karpov and the World Cup 2006 Veselin Topalov.

In Germany he played for USC Magdeburg and SG Heidelberg - Kirchheim in the chess Bundesliga, starting from the season 2010/11 for nickel Aue. In Ukraine, he plays for Keystone Kiev the team champion in 2007, 2008 and 2009 (2008 renamed KVV Kievchess, 2009 in PKV Kievchess ). In 2001 he moved to a Green Card and a scholarship from the Ukraine to Baltimore, Maryland. There he played until his degree in Linguistics for the University UMBC.

Private

Onischuk has five siblings. His sister Anna Rudolph ( b. 1978, WIM) plays for SV Mülheim -Nord in the women's Bundesliga.
