Volkswagen Type 3

The type 3 is a vehicle from Volkswagen, it gave as a sedan with stage and Hatchback (TL stood for touring sedan ) and as a combi (Variant). It was also the first mid-size model of VW.

The car was introduced as the VW 1500 at the 40th International Motor Show in September 1961 in Frankfurt. From the cars offered in July 1973 to nearly 2.6 million cars were produced.

The numbering is chronological:

Type 1 is the VW Beetle, Type 2 is the abbreviation for the VW Transporter, and the last VW with air-cooled rear-mounted engine, the 1968 presented type 4 ( VW 411, from 1973: VW 412).

General

In the basic concept ( and the wheelbase) with the VW Beetle identical, of middle-class VW 1500/1600 raised by its modern and larger body from a higher space of beetles. In particular, the variant (the first VW Kombi with this name ) was very popular with a share of 43 percent ( 1970) of type 3 approvals.

  • 08.1965 - VW 1600 TL ( touring sedan, popularly sometimes bowdlerized as " Sad solution " or " Sad line " ) hatchback, greater vehicle width, a larger engine, footwell heating and a luggage compartment of 260 liters for 6,690 DM from the factory, continue with 54 PS, 1500 N renamed to 1500 A, with a flat power - Einvergaser and 45 hp, saloon initially only available as a standard model.
  • 1966 - Electrical System 12 Volt version, notchback sedan with better equipment as the VW 1600 L available since the 1600 TL fastback body not met with unanimous approval. All models were now referred to as the VW 1600; VW 1600 A with 45 hp has continued an engine with 1.5 liter displacement.
  • 1967 - Automatic model with modern semi-trailing arm rear axle. The 54 hp engine was also available with the Bosch D-Jetronic injection system available: first standard electronic fuel injection in the world. As of August 1967 ( model year 1968) the filler neck of the fuel tank is the same as the Beetle (Type 1) via an outside flap to achieve and not after opening the front cover.

2,583,015 Type 3 were built, of which nearly half ( 1,202,483 ) as Variant.

Type 3 also a two-seater Karmann Ghia coupe was from early 1962 available, see VW Type 34 convertible versions derived from the sedan and the Karmann Ghia, were indeed built for testing, but not released for series production. VW 1600 in Brazil

In Brazil, a VW 1600 was built from 1968 to 1980, the tech actually just the engine with the German model had in common ( flat motor ). The chassis was taken over by the VW Beetle and was given the wider bottom plates of the Karmann Ghia ( oscillating rear axle, front disc brakes ). So there was the Brazilian VW 1600 as a four-door.
