Võru ( German: Werro ) is a town in the district Võru in southeastern Estonia with about 15,000 inhabitants. The city is the center of business and government in a circle Võru, which has about 43,000 inhabitants. In many of the South Estonian dialect of Võru ( Võru language) is spoken.

History

As a founding date of Võru August 21, 1784 is considered, where the Governor-General of Riga has sealed with his signature a decree establishing the new town, and determining the city's name. 1785 city planning has been completed. In the historic road network which has been preserved as some single-storey wooden houses until today, dominate right angles.

Culture and sights

Outstanding cultural events are a folk music festival that takes place annually in July, as well as concerts at the nearby Tamula Lake.

  • A monument to Friedrich Reinhold Kreutz forest, the creator of the Estonian national epic Kalevipoeg by Amandus Adamson
  • The Friedrich Reinhold- Kreutz Forest Museum ( founded in 1941 )
  • The Võrumaa Muuseum: it gives an overview of life in county Võru from the Stone Age to the Modern
  • The Võru Instituut for the study of the dialect of southern Estonia
  • St. Catherine's Church (1793 ) and the Apostolic Orthodox Church ( 1806)

Estonia Memorial

The memorial to the perished in the sinking of the ferry Estonia in 1994, 70 inhabitants of the city is in the green area Seminari väljak next to St. Catherine's Church ( Katariina Nicholas' Church ). The sculpture shows a steeply sloping black granite block, which " sets" in the soil. From the granite block tower two collapsed " Praying Hands " out (after a design by Albrecht Dürer). In addition to the sculpture has a sleek white cross. The memorial was completed in 1996 by sculptor Mati Karmin and lists the names of the 70 dead.

Economy

The city was and is a geographically favorable Umschlagort for trade with Russia and Latvia.

Traffic

The city lies on the major railway route Saint Petersburg - Pskov - Riga and the main road 2/ 263 Europe Street Tallinn - Tartu - Luhamaa. The passenger transport by rail is however set for about 10 years, the city train station now demolished.
