Walter Holscher

Walter Holscher ( born January 23, 1900 in Hamburg, † August 7, 1973 in North Hollywood, Los Angeles; actually Walter Paul Erhard Hölscher ) was an American production designer German origin.

Life

Born Walter Holscher grew in the district of Altona in Hamburg and received training as a plasterer. On November 23, 1923, he moved to the United States. According to the census of 1930 was Hölscher, who now called himself Holscher, now based in Los Angeles. On 10 May 1935 he was naturalized. In Hollywood, he began shortly before the Second World War, his film work as an assistant to scene -formers.

1943 Walter Holscher was hired as art director of Columbia Pictures, where he initially only B- movies were entrusted. From 1946 he was also responsible for more prestigious productions of the studio as The Jazz Singer (The Jolson Story, 1946). Until 1965 he was involved in more than 70 films. For Address Unknown ( 1944) and Pal Joey, he was nominated along with other leaders each scene for an Oscar in the category Best Art Direction. However, he and his colleagues could not prevail against the competition itself. From 1956 he also worked several times for the U.S. television.
