The four-part film War and Peace (Russian Война и мир, Voina i mir ) was filmed from 1965 to 1967 by the Soviet director Sergei Bondarchuk after the historical novel War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. By questionable calculation methods they came up with 100 million dollars production costs, this would correspond to today, adjusted for inflation 700 million. Thus, the film would be the most expensive. These figures are wrong, because the producers reported in August 1967, the total cost amounted to 8,291,712 rubles exactly, or $ 9,213,013 after the then exchange rate. The Soviet version has a total running time of 432 minutes ( around seven hours). The premiere of the first part took place on March 14, 1966, the fourth and last part was premiered on November 4, 1967.

In the GDR had War and Peace 2,225,649 visitors.

Criticism

" Bondarchuk follows - in contrast streamlined Vidor's Hollywood version - the epic storytelling of the original almost word for word, and provides a highly detailed counterpart to the material wealth of the Romans, impressed by plasticity in the depiction of milieu and period atmosphere. "

" What is amazing in this movie: (...) He remains bound in the history, he shows history without any tendency. "

" Although the producers have made to faithfully reproduce the work meets the requirements of Tolstojschen template neither in form nor in its content. However, as a historical film with depth it is recommended from 14 years. "
