Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award

The Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award is one of the world's highest awards for disabled athletes. It honors those athletes that best convey the spirit of disabled sports and socially committed to an extraordinary degree; In addition, it should recognize the special achievements in overcoming the disability through sport.

The award goes back to an initiative of the South Korean doctor Youn Dai Whang, who - although even ill with polio - for decades committed to the needs of disabled people. She was awarded in 1988 by the South Korean press the Today 's Woman Prize and donated the prize money to the International Coordination Committee ( ICC), the forerunner of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The ICC decided to point out the Whang Youn Dai Achievement Award auszuloben.

Every day from the start of Paralympic Games up to a certain period, up to two athletes (which must then be a man and a woman) are proposed by the IPC, the National Paralympic Committee or members of the press site for the price either. The nomination should be independent of nationality, gender, sporting success, religion, color or ideology. However, the nominee must meet three criteria:

From the nominees, the Seoul -based award committee selects three men and three women as candidates. These six athletes are then evaluated in half-hour talks personally with them approximately the same questions are asked. Ultimately, the jury gives the medals from 75 grams of pure gold traditionally during the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games on a male athlete and one female athlete.
