Whoa, Nelly! is the debut album of the Portuguese- Canadian singer Nelly Furtado. It was released on 24 October 2000.

Genesis

Nelly Furtado is the sole author of the most titles in the other numbers she has written the lyrics along with Gerald Eaton and Brian West.

Some of the songs had already been established in previous sessions with Track & Field, even before Furtado had her record deal with DreamWorks.

On the album various musical styles ( pop, hip-hop, Contemporary R & B) are mixed. Slant magazine called Whoa, Nelly! as " a refreshing and invigorating antidote to the mass of pop princesses and rap - metal bands that had gained at the beginning of the millennium, the greatness of the pop music. "

Importance

In the first months after the release of the album was largely ignored, but with Furtado's growing reputation (not least by the two hits I'm Like a Bird and Turn Off the Light) also increased sales significantly. In spring 2001, Furtado took part as a headliner at the burn- in-the- Spotlight Tour, which brought additional attention to the album. Whoa, Nelly! achieved in many countries gold and platinum status and has sold over 6.5 million times.

For the Grammy Awards of 2002, the album received four nominations. Furtado's debut single I'm Like a Bird won the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance category.
