Wigeric of Lotharingia

Wigerich, also Widericus, Windericus, Widiacus (* 870, † before 922 ) was an early medieval Count in the Duchy of Lorraine.

Possessions

Wigerich ( Widiacus ) is mentioned in a letter issued in Trier King Zwentibolds as important Graf ( comes venerabilis ) 899. He had Count's authority over the city of Trier, as appears from a charter of Louis the Child on 19 September 902. He was also 902 and 909 Count in Bidgau and from 915/916 Count Palatine of Lorraine, as a created in the Palatinate to Herstal charter of Charles the Simple occupied. Furthermore Wigerich had the bailiwicks of the Santa Rumoldusabtei in Mechelen ( as a fief of the Bishop of Liege ) and the Monastery of Hastière that him and his son Adalberon were confirmed by a completed 911-915 certificate of Charles the Simple.

Family

Wigerich was brother of the Abbot Friedrich von Gorze and Verdun ( Saint Vanne ). Maybe Wigerich was a son of Count Odacar ( Ardennergau, Bidgau and Bliesgau ). He is certainly the case as the progenitor of Ardennergrafen ( Wigeriche ).

Wigerich was with Cunegonde (* 890/895) married a granddaughter of Louis the Stammerer and perhaps a daughter of Reginar I of Hainaut ( Reginare ).

He founded the Abbey of Hastière, where he was probably buried.

Children of Wigerich and Cunegonde are:

  • Gozelo (c. 914, 942 † April 19 ); ∞ 930 Uda (* 905, † April 10 963) daughter of Count Gerhard ( Matfriede )
  • Adalbero I. (* 910, † April 26 962), Bishop of Metz 929-962
  • Siegfried I. (* 915/917, † 26 October 997), Count of Moselle district
  • Frederick I (* 912 17 June 978), count of Bar and duke of Upper Lorraine 959
  • Giselbert, Count of Ardennergau

Comments: Are often viewed as children of Wigerich: Liutgard (* 915, testified on April 8, 960); ∞ I Adalbert († 944 ), Count of Metz ( Matfriede ); ∞ Eberhard II of Eguisheim († 972/973 ) and her brother Henry ( above 970). There are apparently children of a Wigerich, son of Roric, attested in the territory of Count Wigerich (these two " Wigeriche " be 909 as contemporaries cited in Bidgau ).
