William Lombardy

William James Lombardy ( born December 4, 1937 in New York) is an American chess player and former Roman Catholic priest. A wider public he was known for his long association with Bobby Fischer.

Playing career

1956 Lombardy won the open championship of Canada; 1957 Junior World Championships U20 in Toronto with the unprecedented final result of eleven wins in eleven games.

1960 gave the world chess federation FIDE him the title of Grand Master. In the U.S. Championship 1960/1961 he finished second and qualified for the Interzonal, but he opted not to participate. 1963 and 1965 he won the Open Championship in the USA. Lombardy represented his native country at the Chess Olympiads in 1958, 1960, 1968, 1970, 1974, 1976 and 1978., 1976 in Haifa, he won the U.S. team gold in 1970 in Siegen, he received gold for the best result on the first reserve board.

In 1972 he was Fischer 's second in the battle for the world championship against Boris Spassky, but hardly took his services. Don Schultz remembers the following dialogue: Lombardy to Fischer " That's a difficult position. Let's go to the hotel and analyze. " Fischer said, " What do you mean, analyze? The guy is a fish. Let's go bowling. "
