William R. Day

William Rufus Day ( born April 17, 1849 in Ravenna, Ohio; † July 9, 1923 on Mackinac Iceland, Michigan) was an American diplomat, lawyer and politician ( Republican). He served as Secretary of State and as a judge on the Supreme Court.

Biography

1870 graduated Day at the University of Michigan. He settled as a lawyer in Ohio and worked as a judge later.

From 1897 to 1898, he was 22 Assistant Secretary of State (Deputy Foreign Minister ) under Secretary of State John Sherman. On April 28, he succeeded Sherman as Secretary of State under President William McKinley and remained so until 16 September 1898. As Foreign Minister, he signed a peace treaty after the Spanish-American War. His successor as foreign minister was John Hay.

From 1899 to 1903, Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals Day of the 6th district and directly afterwards to 1922 Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court ( Supreme Court of the United States ).
