William Turner Thiselton-Dyer

William Turner Thiselton - Dyer ( born July 28, 1843 in Westminster, London, † December 23, 1928 in Witcombe, Gloucestershire ) was an English botanist. He was the third director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. His botanical author abbreviation is " Dyer ".

Life and work

His father William George Dyer was a doctor in London. William Turner Thiselton - Dyer attended the King's College in London and then studied mathematics at Christ Church College, Oxford University.

He was professor of natural history at the Royal Agricultural College in Cirencester and then from 1870 professor of botany at the Royal College of Science for Ireland, Dublin. In 1872 he became professor at the Royal Horticultural Society in London. Thiselton - Dyer was also " Examiner in Botany " at the University of London. At the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, he was from 1875 to 1885 and Assistant Director 1885-1905 Director.

Thiselton - Dyer was capensis from 1896 editor of the begun by William Henry Harvey and Otto Wilhelm special flora. From the Flora of Tropical Africa by Daniel Oliver he gave 1897-1902 out all the volumes 4-8 with the exception of 6 (2).

In 1877 he married Harriet Ann Hooker ( 1854-1945 ), daughter of the botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker.

Honors

Thiselton - Dyer was recorded in 1880 as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society. In 1882 he was Companion, 1899 Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George. It was 1892 Companion of the British Equestrian Order of the Order of the Indian Empire. The Royal Society of New South Wales honored him in 1892 with the awarding of the Clarke Medal.

His father Joseph Dalton Hooker named in his honor the plant genus Dyera Hook.f. from the family of the dogbane family ( Apocynaceae ).
