Wissenkerke

Wissenkerke is a village in the municipality of Noord- Beveland in the Dutch province of Zeeland. Its population is 1078 (as of 1 January 2008). By 1995 Wissenkerke was an independent municipality, which included also Kamper country and Geersdijk. Since 1995 Wissenkerke administrative headquarters of the then newly formed municipality of Noord- Beveland. In Wissenkerke there are several campsites and marina Sophia Haven.

Wissenkerke was first mentioned in 1242 as a parish. However, the exact location of this old Wissenkerke is not precisely known. In 1352 the village had to be relocated after a flood. In 1530 and on November 2, 1532 in Noord- Beveland was hit by two storm surges, with the latter also Wissenkerke was swept away. Only the church tower remained and stood for several years on the foreland to the Oosterschelde.

In 1652 the area was again polders. The dike around the Wissenkerkepolder was closed, and the present village was eventually rebuilt as planned with orthogonally arranged plots. Shortly after 1670 a new church was built. The new Wissenkerke had a port on the Cruijckelcreke, a tidal creek that ran east of the village, and its outflow was from the Wissenkerkepolder on the southern edge of the polder. This tidal creek silted but steadily, and the port disappeared first in 1697, then 1719 and finally 1771, when the area was further polders. In 1860 the flour mill De Onderneming was ( German: " The Company " ) built the mill Landzigt ( " Country View" ) dates back to 1869.

In the 1930s, the discussion of a municipal reorganization began, with Wissenkerke together with Colijnsplaar, Kats and Kortgene in a new (large) community Kortgene should rise. In 1941, this merger came into being, although in principle, but without Wissenkerke the time being but then remained independent. Only in 1995 it came to the union of Kortgene and Wissenkerke to the time the new municipality of Noord- Beveland, which Wissenkerke since then is the administrative headquarters.

Coat of arms and flag

The coat of arms of Wissenkerke shows a red, diamond-shaped buckle on silver ( white ) background. It was derived from the coat of arms of van Wissenkercke. On September 6, 1853 was set as the municipal coat of arms.

The flag consists of three stripes in the colors blue, white and black. The white stripe contains the red buckle from the municipal coat of arms. The blue band refers to the old coat of arms of Kamper country, the black of the Geersdijk.
