History

In Colijnsplaar was a temple that was dedicated to Nehalennia, a Celtic- Germanic goddess, protector of fishermen and sailors. Around this temple was built a trading post, which was called Ganuenta. At the end of the third century, the area was depopulated because regularly invading Germanic tribes and because the area was regularly flooded.

From about 700 began re-colonizing. After the great flood 1014, the first dikes and mounds were created. Around 1100 the first church was built in Noord- Bevelands shaft. After the great flood of 1134 North Beveland was a total of dikes. The Saint -Felix- flood ( Sint- Felixvloed ) washed over on November 5, 1530, the entire island, and the All Saints destroyed in 1532, just two years later, all the buildings; only the spiers of Kortgene and Wissenkerke still sticking out of the water. On the steeple of Kortgene a new nave was built in the aftermath.

The population of Noord- Beveland came from all parts of Zeeland, but also from Flanders, Holland, the Duchy of Brabant, the Duchy of Limburg, and even from Germany, France, England, Scotland and Switzerland. The dialect of Noord- Beveland indicates that most colonists immigrated from Schouwen- Duiveland.

1598 Noord- Beveland was partially polders. The villages Colijnsplaar and Kats were built. This was followed in 1652 Wissenkerke, 1668 Geersdijk 1684 and the rest of Noord- Beveland.

The area was severely affected by the floods of 1953; the dike of Kortgene was on the night of February 1, 1953 to the first that broke.
