Colijnsplaat

The village is part of the island community Colijnsplaar Noord- Beveland, in the province Zeeland in the Oosterschelde.

History

Today's Colijnsplaar was founded in 1598, after the reclamation of the Oud -Noord -Beveland - polder. The town's name comes from the " shaved " ( an overgrown Landanschwemmung before the last diking that is not inundated at mean high water) Colin Plate. This name is first mentioned in history in 1489. The town was planned as voorstraat Village ( a wide main street perpendicular to the dike ), with adjacent plots. 1599 a harbor was created especially to trade of agricultural products and a ferry service to Zierikzee ( Schouwen- Duiveland ). After the construction of the Zeeland Bridge ( about 2 km to the east of Colijnsplaar to Zierikzee; construction period 1963-1965 ) the ferry service was discontinued.

Storm surge in 1953

In the great flood in 1953, the residents of Colijnsplaar the Sieltor tried desperately in the dike that threatened to break through the herantosenden water masses to strengthen and thereby preserve the village from flooding. However, the task would have been in vain if not a thrown by a storm on the coast freighter had run just before this Siel due, so acted as a very effective breakwater and thus the flood fortifications preserved from destruction. The height profile of Colijnsplaar is from west to east between -0.9 m ( Havelaarstraat, Bridge De Valle), about 1.5 m in the village center ( intersection Havelaarstraat / voorstraat ), to the area of the road Oostzeedijk -0.4 m NAP ( Normal Amsterdam Peil ). At the highest water level in the early morning of Sunday, February 1, 1953, around 3:30 clock of about 4.5 m NAP, the entire place had been flooded with about three feet high water level. Almost all the houses were within a very short time ( had many homes in Colijnsplaar and to date have only a ground floor and a loft conversion ) up to the edge of the roof was under water. Miles of farmland would be flooded with salt water and thus become unusable for decades.

This event went down in history of the place as the miracle of Colijnsplaar. In 1993, the former town hall was built to commemorate the memorial " strijd tegen het water ", of Flushing artist Jan Haas, west built.
