Yago Lamela
Yago Lamela ( born July 24, 1977 in Avilés; Yago Lamela Tobio full name ) is a Spanish long jumper.
Career
The great year of Yago Lamela was 1999. At the World Indoor Championships in Maebashi, he provided the Cuban Iván Pedroso a great and very exciting fight. Lamela boosted the Spanish indoor record over 8.27 m and 8.42 m in the last attempt on the then European record length of 8.56 m. Pedroso countered with 8.62 m in the last jump of the competition and won his fourth consecutive title. Lamela was rewarded with silver.
After this exciting competition expected not only the Spanish public much of the long jump competition at the World Championships in Seville, especially since Lamela had set up in Turin in June with a 8.56 m Spanish record and thus was able to confirm his indoor record in the open. In a high-class competition Lamela went first lead. Then Pedroso took the lead with 8.56 m, while behind three athletes competed for the medals. Lamela won with 8.40 m from the fourth attempt silver before Gregor Cankar (SLO ) with 8.36 m and Jai Taurima (AUS) 8.35 m. Pedroso but won his third title in a row.
At the 2000 Olympic Games Lamela stuck in 19th in qualifying. Four years later, at the Athens Games, he finished in eleventh place in the preliminaries.
After a relatively unsuccessful 2001 Lamela came back at the Indoor Athletics Championships 2002 in Vienna and finished with 8.17 m second place behind his teammate Raúl Fernández. At the European Championships in Munich Lamela won with 7.99 m bronze behind Oleksiy Lukaschewytsch (UKR ) and Siniša Ergotić (CRO ).
At the World Indoor Championships 2003 Lamela won silver with 8.28 meters and one centimeter behind Dwight Phillips (USA). In the summer at the World Championships again won Phillips before James Beckford (JAM ) and Lamela, of 8.22 m had ten centimeters behind gold.
On March 8, 2009, he lost his European indoor record at the German Sebastian Bayer.
Yago Lamela is 1.78 m and weighs 68 kg. He studied computer engineering at the University of Oviedo.
