Younghi Pagh-Paan

Younghi Pagh -Paan ( born October 30, 1945 in Cheongju, South Korea) is a South Korean composer. She lives in Bremen and Panicale, Italy.

Life

From 1965 to 1972 studied composition and musicology at the Seoul National University. From 1974 to 1979 studied composition at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg with Klaus Huber ( her partner ), Brian Ferneyhough and Peter Förtig.

Pagh -Paan lay her stage name in the 1970s by the addition Paan added ( Kor. 파안, Hanja琶 案) to their very frequent in Korea family name Pagh. Pa (琶) symbolizes the Musical and refers to the musical instrument pipa (琵琶) and (案) at the end of the plan, which together reflect the composer. There are also the same sino Korean reading paan even with the Hanja破 颜in破 颜 大笑( 파안대소 ), which means " to burst into loud laughter " as is.

In her compositions she tries to connect from Korean folklore and avant-garde.

Internationally known she made the performance of her orchestral work SORI at the Donaueschingen Music Days 1980. Since 1994 she has been professor of composition at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen, where she founded the studio new music, which she ran until her retirement in 2011. To retirement, she was awarded the Bremen medal for art and science.
