Zadonsk

Zadonsk (Russian Задонск ) is a city in Lipetsk Oblast (Russia) with 9698 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the central Russian plate about 90 km southwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Lipetsk on the left bank of the Don, at the mouth of the river Teschewka.

Zadonsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

In place of the present city was built in the early 17th century the village Teschewka, which was first mentioned in 1615. 1610 the Monastery of the Icon of Our Lady of Vladimir, short Mother of God Monastery was far from the monks Kirill and Gerasim was established, to which the village belonged in a row.

1765 fell under the Empress Catherine the Great, the lands of the monastery and so the village Teschewka to the state. On September 25, 1779 Place received its town charter as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) under the present name (from russian sa Donom, for behind the Don ). 1782 a master plan for the city was confirmed.

From 1769 until his death in 1783 lived the former Bishop Tikhon of Voronezh ( secular name Timofei Sokolowski ) in Sadonsker monastery. As one of the most influential religious scholars of the 18th century it was in 1861 canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church as Tikhon of Zadonsk what became the monastery with the relics Tikhon an important place of pilgrimage.

In the 1920s the monastery was closed by the Soviet authorities. In 1990, the return of the monastery to the Church and the Vladimir Cathedral was rededicated.

Culture and sights

In Zadonsk the architectural ensemble of the Mother of God Monastery are ( Богородицкий монастырь / Bogorodizki monastyr ) with the St. Vladimir's Cathedral ( Владимирский собор / Wladimirski Sobor ) 1845-1853 (architect Konstantin Thon ) and other churches receive, also outside the monastery the Assumption Church ( Успенская церковь / Uspenskaja Tserkov ) of 1800 and a number of secular buildings from the 19th century.

The city has a local history museum in the former house of the pharmacist Ulrich from the beginning of the 19th century.

In the village Kaschary of Rajons Zadonsk is the Mitrofan - of - Voronezh Church ( церковь Митрофания Воронежского / Tserkov Mitrofanija Woroneschskogo ) with the associated Automon Clock Tower ( колокольня Автомона / kolokolnja Awtomona ) of 1823. Located in the village Skornjakowo the former country seat of General lies and hero of the Crimean War Nikolai Murawjow - Karski, who died in 1866 there. In the village there is a Repez Gutsparkensemble.

The nearest railway station is Ulussarka on the track ( Moscow ) Yelets - Waluiki 25 kilometers north west. The M4 highway Moscow - Voronezh - Rostov-on- Don - Novorossiysk bypasses Zadonsk south.
