Záhorie (military district)

Zahorie is a military area in Okres Malacky, western Slovakia. It includes three military training areas: Zahorie, Kuchyňa and Turecky Vrch.

The area is located in the countryside Zahorie, geomorphological in Borská nížina ( Truppenübungsplatz Zahorie and Kuchyňa ) and in the Small Carpathians ( Truppenübungsplatz Turecky Vrch ) and comprises 276.51 km ². The main section extends roughly from Lozorno in the south and in the west to Malacky Senica in the Northeast. The exclave Turecky Vrch is located southeast of the community Jablonové, the D2 motorway forms part of the western boundary of the military area.

The military base was established in the 1920s on the large estates of the Hungarian landowners family Palffy and was until 1989 very little accessible. Besides the oslovak from 1993, the Slovak army it was also used by German troops during the Second World War (see also German - Slovak protection zone statute ) and Soviet troops during the time of the Iron Curtain. Since the late 1990s, the U.S. Air Force aircraft are active in the military area.
