Želkovice

Želkovice ( German Schelkowitz ) is a municipality in the Czech Republic. It belongs to the Okres Louny.

Geography

The place is located 9 km west of Trebenice in the southwest of the Central Mountains. It is situated in 335 m asl in the hills and is completely surrounded by orchards. By Želkovice leads the state road 15 neighboring villages are Šepetely in the northeast, Třebívlice the southeast, Židovice the southwest, Lahovice in the west and Řisuty in the northwest.

History

Želkovice was first documented in 1237. From this period also the oldest building of the village comes a Romanesque rotunda.

1821, Emperor Franz II a patent which obliged the Schelkowitzer farmers for breeding thoroughbred horses for the new post office in Liebshausen. In the years 1852-1853 the cultivation of a Neo-Romanesque nave of St. Peter and Paul Church gave its present form took place.

Most residents of the village are traditionally fruit growers. Since 1993 Želkovice is an independent municipality, before the village was incorporated to Libčeves. The most valuable monument of the village, the church rotunda is located in a poor state of repair.
