Zhang Yimou

Zhang Yimou (Chinese张艺谋/张艺谋, Pinyin Zhang Yimou; born November 14, 1951 in Xi'an, China) is a Chinese film director. Zhang is the most successful representative of the " Fifth Generation" of Chinese cinema. His films were subject to long time the Aufführverboten the Chinese authorities. Biography

Zhang Yimou was born in Xi'an. His family was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution because of their Kuomintang background, he sent for farm work. He then worked in a textile factory in Xianyang.

In 1978 he was admitted as a hobby photographer for the subject camera at the Beijing Film Academy because of its benefits. After graduating in 1982, he was appointed as director of photography on the film studio of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Nanning.
