Zoltán Magyar

Zoltán Magyar ( born December 13, 1953 in Budapest ) is a retired Hungarian artistic gymnast. Magyar was in the 1970s, the outstanding gymnast on the pommel horse, who won from 1973 to 1980 all major championships on the unit.

Career

Magyar belonged to Ferencvaros Budapest and trained under Laszlo Vigh. Magyar began in 1965 with the gymnastics and was from 1971 the Hungarian national team.

Already with 18 years of Magyar took part in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, where he was ranked 29 in the individual standings and No. 8 with the Hungarian team, but could still qualify for no apparatus finals. A year later, he won the European Championship in Grenoble gold on the pommel horse. The World Gymnastics Championships 1974 in Varna Magyar won with 0.2 points ahead of the Russians Nikolai Efimovich Andrianov. At the European Championships in 1975 in Bern Magyar could successfully defend his title from 1973. With room 4 he reached the best all-around result of his career in Berne.

1976 during his second at the Olympics, he finished with the team's 4th place, just behind the team from the GDR. In the multi- combat rating Magyar finished ninth and fifth in the horse jump. On pommel horse, he could not be beaten again, with 19.7 points, he scored the highest score of all devices finale. In 1977, he won his third European title in Vilnius. In the World Gymnastics Championships in 1978, he reached with 19.8 points again the best score of all devices. With 0,375 points ahead of second-placed Eberhard Gienger Magyar reached the biggest lead of his career. A year later at the World Gymnastics Championships 1979 in Fort Worth to Magyar increased to 19.825 points, but had only 0.1 points ahead of the Americans Kurt Thomas. At the end of his career Magyar took in Moscow in 1980 for the third time in the Olympic Games in part. In multiplayer battle he finished ninth, but won the team bronze, after Japan and the United States boycotted the games. On Pommel Horse Magyar reached with 19.925 points once again the highest rating of all devices.

1974, 1978 and 1980 Magyar Hungary was voted athlete of the year. After the 1980 Olympic Games Magyar ended his career in competitive sports. He now works as a veterinarian in Budapest. 2012 Zoltán Magyar was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

Special exercises

Two invented by Magyar exercise parts were named after him and today are standard on the pommel horse. When Magyar Hiking the Turner moved in the transverse behavior of the entire device and shows circular edges. In the Magyar spindle of the Turner turns a pirouette on the device and shows circular edges.
