Zurich Open

The WTA Zurich ( officially: Tennis.com Zurich Open ) was a women's tennis tournament of the WTA Tour, which was held from 1984 to 2008 each October. The tournament was from 1993 to the circle of Tier I Series, the then highest category after the four Grand Slam tournaments. The prize money was $ 1,300,000. In the last 2008 edition, the tournament was endowed with $ 600,000 and listed in the category Tier II.

History

1984 Zurich received his first WTA tournament, the European Indoors in the Zurich indoor sports hall. Due to lack of space it was fought from 1997 to 2004 in Kloten Schluefweg, from 1998 under the name Swisscom Challenge. In 2005, the event went under the slogan "the girls are back in town" as Zurich Open in the renovated Hallenstadion in Zurich back. In 2008, the 25th and last edition took place for the time being.

Record winner is Steffi Graf with six tournament victories. The previous winners from Switzerland Manuela Maleeva - Fragnière (1993 ), Martina Hingis (2000) and Patty Schnyder ( 2002).

From 2010 to 2012, a tournament in the ATP Champions Tour at the indoor sports hall Zurich was held under the name " Zurich Open ".
