1972–73 ice hockey Bundesliga season

The 1972/73 season of ice hockey league was the 15th season of the highest German Hockey League. German champion was the EV Füssen, who won his 16th but at the same time last title in Zweikanmpf with the Düsseldorf EC.

New in the league was the most successful club Berliner SC, who could occupy the sixth place in his first season after returning to the Bundesliga. In order to reduce the number of Bundesliga teams to ten teams, there was this season two direct relegated. In addition to the novice EV Rosenheim also the ESV Kaufbeuren had to join the in the newly founded after the season 2nd Bundesliga. For the Cologne EC returned to the 1st Bundesliga.

Mode

Like last year, the teams played in a double round of the German champions, so each club played two home and two away matches against other teams. The two last placed athlete had to descend into the newly formed 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the season, since the league was abgestockt from eleven to ten teams, only the champion of the league was promoted to the Bundesliga.

For the 1973/74 season the new Bundesliga 2 with first 16 clubs was introduced. The Master of the 2nd Bundesliga should ascend directly to the 1st Bundesliga, the league was divided into a northern and southern group and one at the same time as the third highest division in the German Ice Hockey.
