1979–80 Soviet League season
The 1979/80 season the league Wysschaja was the 34th season of the highest Soviet Hockey League. The Soviet league title secured for a total of 23 times CSKA Moscow, while Ischstal Izhevsk and Awtomobilist Sverdlovsk descended to the second division.
Mode
The twelve teams in the league played Wysschaja in a common main round four times against any opponent, bringing the total number of games per team was 44. The point- best team became champion, while the table last descent directly to the second division. The teams ranked ten and eleven had to play in the relegation to the Second and Third of the second division. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.

In the relegation to the SKA Leningrad was able to secure the league and Salavat Yulaev Ufa ascend. Ischstal Izhevsk descended to the second division, in the crystal Saratov also remained.
