Africo

Africo is an Italian town in the province of Reggio Calabria in Calabria with 3134 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Africo is located 76 km east of Reggio Calabria. The town lies on the coast of the Ionian Sea. The neighboring municipalities are Bianco, Bruzzano Zeffirio, Cosoleto, Roghudi, Samo, Sant'Agata del Bianco and Staiti.

The inhabitants live on agriculture and the production of cement. Tourism is underdeveloped, although development of hotels would be possible due to the proximity of the Ionian Sea.

History

The town was founded in the 9th century BC. In the earthquakes in 1783, 1905 and 1908, the town was damaged. After a flood in October 1951, the Africo and the district Casalinuovo was destroyed. The town was built on a slightly higher level again.
