Altillac

Altillac ( Altilhac in Occitan ) is a commune with 860 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Corrèze, in the Limousin region. The municipality is a member of the Association of Municipalities Canton de Mercœur. The inhabitants call themselves Altillacois (it).

Geography

The municipality is located in the Massif Central on the left bank of the Dordogne in the lower part of the Xaintrie. The prefecture of the department, tulle, located about 40 kilometers north and Argentat good 10 kilometers to the northeast and Beaulieu -sur -Dordogne, about one kilometer west.

Neighboring communities of Altillac are Bassignac- le -Bas in the north, Reygade in the northeast, Mercœur in the east, Gagnac -sur -Cère in the south, Astaillac the southwest, Beaulieu -sur -Dordogne in the west and Brivezac in the northwest.

History

Stone witnesses as Neolithic megalithic tombs already documented a prehistoric settlement in the municipal area. But later a community only in Gallo- Roman times developed under the name Altillac whose etymological roots in the Latin word Altus locus and mean high place. Thereafter, in the Carolingian period was Altillac to a seat of a Viguerie.

During the Second World War, on 28 May 1942, the Château du Doux was requisitioned by the Regional Prefect in Limoges as an internment camp for Jewish families.
