Awala-Yalimapo

Awala - Yalimapo is a French municipality with 1305 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) located in the extreme northwest of Guyana near the border with Suriname in the Overseas Territory of French Guyana.

Geography

Awala - Yalimapo is located in the extreme north -west of French Guiana, between the estuaries of Mana and Maroni, far from the coast. The next community Mana is 22 km away and the nearest town of Saint -Laurent- du- Maroni is less than 60 km.

History

The municipality was created administratively on 31 December 1988 by detachment from the Mana municipality, under pressure from the Indian Kalina in the villages Aouara and Hattes. These villages were formerly an external prison camp prison in Saint- Laurent- du- Maroni.

Population
