Macouria

Macouria is a commune with 9995 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Overseas Territory French Guiana, which is located in the north of South America. However, because the main settlement is Tonate and there is also the local government, the community is often referred to Macouria - Tonate.

Geography

The municipality has an area of ​​377.5 km ² and is located on the Atlantic coast, northwest of the capital Cayenne. The largest settlement in the area is Tonate, but in recent years many more settlements were built near the coast. The community name Macouria comes from the eponymous river, which flows through the municipal area from the high mountains Guiana forth and flows Tonate into the Atlantic.

Population

Macouria has 9995 inhabitants (1 January 2011) and is therefore one of the larger communities in French Guiana. 1982, the municipality still 446 inhabitants, followed Macouria experienced a very steep population growth.
