Roura

Roura is a commune with 2609 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the Overseas Territory French Guiana, located in the north of South America.

Geography

Roura is located north of French Guiana, 27 kilometers south of the capital Cayenne. The municipality covers besides the main settlement Roura, located at Oyack, the lower reaches of the river Comté, which flows into the estuary Mahury, nor the settlement Cacao, which is predominantly inhabited by Hmongs. This came in the wake of colonization of Laos and Indochina, a former French colony, to become refugees in French Guiana.

On the banks of Oyack and Mahury are numerous other small settlements, these include Favard, Dacca and Fourgassié.

Population

The population of Roura is mixed from many ethnic groups who migrated for various reasons to French Guiana. In addition to the Creoles who make up the majority of the population, and the Hmongs in the settlement Cacao live in the municipality of Roura Palikuren indigenous and other minorities from Hawaii and Laos.
