The County is located in the geographic center of Nebraska and has an area of 6672 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:
History
The Custer County was formed in 1877 on former Indian land. It was named after General George Armstrong Custer ( 1839-1876 ).

According to the census of 2000, there were 11,793 people in Custer County. Of these, 238 persons were accommodated in collective centers, the other residents living in 4,826 households and 3,320 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 98.63 percent White, 0.07 percent African American, 0.41 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, and 0.20 percent from other races; 0.55 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.92 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 4,826 households out of which 30.3 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.9 percent were married couples living together, 5.4 percent were single mothers, 31.2 percent were non-families, 28.9 percent of all households and 15.0 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size is 2.95 people.
Based on the county the population was spread from 26.3 percent population under 18 years, 5.5 percent between 18 and 24 years, 23.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 years and 21.1 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household was $ 30,677, and the median income for a family was $ 37,063. Males had a median income of $ 24,609, women $ 19,732. The per capita income was $ 16,171. 9.1 percent of families and 12.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. This included 16.2 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years and 9.1 percent of seniors aged 65 and over.
