Elato

Elato is an atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. Geographically, it is part of the archipelago of the Caroline Islands, politically it belongs to the State of Yap, the Federated States of Micronesia.

Geography

Elato lies to the east of the State of Yap, 9 km west of the atoll Lamotrek as well as 36 km southeast of Olimarao. Of the Yap Islands in the west of the state it is located more than 900 km. With the neighboring atoll Lamolior it is connected via a 1.5 km long and approximately 20 m below the water surface lying coral bank, so that it forms with the latter a double Atoll. Elato itself is an elongated atoll in the form of an "8 " with a length of 14 km and a maximum width of 2 km. The two lagoons have a total area of approximately 7.5 square kilometers and reach a depth of 27 m (northern lagoon ) or 29 m (southern lagoon ). The total area of the atoll is about 11 km ² of land area, however, only around 0.5 km ². On the fringing reef of the atoll of three islands, Falipi in the south, Kari are in the center and Elato, the main and only inhabited island in the northeast.

Management

Elato forms - together with the uninhabited Lamolior - a comune ( municipality ) of the same name with 96 inhabitants ( 2000), which all belong to the Roman Catholic faith. Within Yap thus has only the atoll Ngulu even fewer inhabitants. Elato included in the fifth and eastern election district of the State of Yap.
