Fais Island
Fais (also Astrolabe, Feis, Feys and Tromelin, engl. Fais Iceland ) is a pacific island that is geographically part of the Caroline Islands and politically to Yap State of the Federated States of Micronesia.
Geography
Fais is an approximately 20 m above the sea level raised fertile and inhabited coral island, so no Atoll in the true sense. The island is far larger land masses in the Pacific Ocean, about 70 km southeast of Ulithi Atoll. The closest island is Gielap ( Giil'ab ) on the members of the community Ulithi Zohhoiiyoru Bank (68 miles west). The nächstgelegende inhabited island is directly east of Ulithi Atoll lying island Falalop (82 miles west).
In census 1987 Fais had to sink a population of 254, which rose to 301 by the census in 1994 to 2000 to 215
History
Fais was probably discovered in 1525 by Diego de Roda and Gomez de Siqueira, later rediscovered by Leogrant de Tromelin.
During World War II the island on January 1, 1945 without a fight occupied by U.S. troops.
Others
The alternative name Tromelin should not be confused with the island of Tromelin, which lies in the Indian Ocean at Reunion.
