George Underwood (athlete)

George Underwood (* November 4, 1884 in Manchester, New Hampshire; † August 28, 1943 in Boston ) was an American track and field athlete and sports journalist.

In the Summer Olympics 1904 in St. Louis An incoming for the New York Athletic Club Underwood won the gold medal in the team run over four miles. A few days earlier he had finished fourth in the 800 -meter run, result in the 400 -meter run is not known.

Later, Underwood was a well-known sports journalist. For the newspaper New York World, he reported on boxing matches. After that, he was sports editor for the New York Morning Telegraph, the Boston American and the Boston Globe. In addition, he was responsible for public relations at the Madison Square Garden.
