List of cities in Japan

The list of cities in Japan provides an overview of the development of the population of the larger cities ( over 100,000 inhabitants) in the East Asian country Japan.

Agglomerations by population

The biggest agglomerations in Japan (as of 1 January 2006):

In the capital Tokyo region alone is home to around 30 percent of people in the country. It is also the largest metropolitan area in the world.

Cities by population

The following table lists the cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, whose name in German transcription and in Japanese as well as the results of the censuses ( IV) of 1995, 2000 and 2005 ( October 1, respectively ). The data for the 2010 census are not yet incorporated into the table, but linked via the links. Listed is also the prefecture to which the city belongs. The population figures relate except in Tokyo to the city in its political boundaries, without politically independent suburbs. For Tokyo, the population of the 23 districts of Tokyo prefecture is specified, which are on the territory of the former city of Tokyo since 1947. The 23 municipalities are not listed separately in the list.

The cities with an asterisk ( *) are the administrative centers of prefectures.
