Achievements

In 2004, the Cardinals narrowly missed out on winning the 2004 World Series, the championship of Major League Baseball, after they had to admit defeat in the final series of the Boston Red Sox. In 2005 they were again in the final of the National League, the " semi-finals " of the World Series in 2005, where they were beaten in the best- of-seven series 4-2 to the Houston Astros. The Cardinals won the World Series in 2006. This was the tenth title in its history. They won in the best- of-seven series 4-1 against the Detroit Tigers; this, however, after they scored in the regular season with only 83 wins against 78 defeats, the worst odds of all division winners. This was beyond the weakest balance sheet at all, and could show in October ever, a later champion before the start of the title contest. MVP of the 102nd World Series was shortstop David Eckstein.

In the 2011 season the St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series again - this time with a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers. The regular season had finished the team with 90 wins and 72 defeats, and thus brought the Wild Card in the National League. In the NL Division Series, the Cardinals won 3-2 against the Philadelphia Philles in the NL championship series they beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2. After the triumph in the World Series manager Tony La Russa announced his retirement.

With the now eleven titles since its beginnings take the Cardinals in this point at least one second after the New York Yankees (American League). These lead with 26 league titles to the list of World Series titles.

Ex - manager Tony La Russa is also ( according to George " Sparky " Anderson, Cincinnati Reds (NL) and Detroit Tigers (AL) ) is only the second in the history of baseball, teams from both leagues titles led (formerly with the Oakland Athletics, American League ).

2012 Postseason

In Game 5 of the series was won by 0:6 deficit to 9-7. For the 6th time in the postseason, such a residue could be turned into victory. 1929 won the Philadelphia Athletics in the World Series against the Chicago Cubs. 1956 won the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series against the New York Yankees. In 1996 the Yankees won the World Series against the Atlanta Braves, and finally the Boston Red Sox in 2008 were successful in the LCS against the Tampa Bay Rays. After the eighth inning the Cardinals were still with 7:9 behind. So they were by the Atlanta Braves in 1992, which had 3 runs in the 9th inning of a 3-2 against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NLCS, the second team in the 9th inning could turn the game. St. Louis currently has in 6 games, where a defeat would have meant the withdrawal, won. Before that they won in Game 4 and 5 against the Phillies 2011 Game 6 and 7 in the World Series against the Rangers in 2011 and the wildcard game against Atlanta 2012 Six such games could win the following teams: . Detroit Tigers ( 1945-1972 ), Kansas City Royals (all in 1985, when the World Series was won ) and the Minnesota Twins ( 1987-2002 ). Pete Kozma, who hit a two-run single in the ninth inning, the first rookie in 88 years, in the ninth inning of a " Do or Die " game succeeded in something. The Washington Senators won the World Series in 1924, as a rookie Earl McNeely a walk-off double in the 12th inning (bottom ) against the New York Giants scored.

Game 3 of the NLCS could be won at home 3-1. All three runs were scored by players who were not among the starters. Matt Carpenter replaced the injured Carlos Beltran Right Fielder in the second inning. He proposed a Two Run Home Run to lead 2-1 in the third inning. Shane Robinson was also loaded and enabled by a gound out, so a successful hit, in which he himself could not reach the first base, the final run in the seventh inning. It is the second time in postseason history that a team of at least three and all runs by substitute players (or one ) was achieved. 2011 in the Division Series, the Phillies were able to win against the Cardinals Jaime Garcia with a three-run pinch- hit in the seventh inning.

The pitcher Jason Motte was able to eject all six players who competed against him. It was only the second "Perfect Save" of two or more innings in a postseason game since Mariano Rivera. He has even made it five times in the postseason. 2001 secured Byung -Hyun Kim for the Diamondbacks in the NLCS victory over two innings against Atlanta.

In addition, 4 different right fielder were used. It started Carlos Beltran, who failed with a knee injury. Then another Matt Carpenter, Shane Robinson and Adron Chambers played on this position. Only one team has ever used in a game over 9 innings 4 players on one position. Curiously, it was the again the Cardinals and also it was right fielder in Game 5 of the NLCS 1987. During the 3:6 defeat John Morris, Curt Ford, Jose Oquendo and Tom Lawless played.

At 8-3 victory in Game 4 pitcher Adam Wainwright allowed in seven innings only one run to batter and 5 were strict. In four starts as a pitcher in his postseason career, he was 27 men make up at bat and only four had a walk. Only two other pitchers so many strike - outs and so few Walks by missed shots in their first four games of the postseason: Cliff Lee ( 30 K, 3 BB) and Roy Halladay (28 K, 4 BB).

The Cardinals scored points twice in the 1st, 5th, 6th and 7th inning. This is the third time in the last two post- seasons that St. Louis had four multiple runs. This was in Game 2 of the NLCS against the Brewers and against the Rangers in Game 3 in the World Series. Yadier Molina recorded his first XBH in this post-season, in the seventh inning, in his 37th attempt at bat. In the regular season he scored 22 home runs and 28 doubles.

Stars

Current top stars of the team are pitcher Chris Carpenter and David Freese third baseman, the World Series Most Valuable Player in 2011. Another former top star of the team was Mark McGwire, in 1998 the old record of 61 home runs in a season beaten ( Roger Maris, New York Yankees, 1961) surpassed with a yield of 70. McGwire but accused of being like many other players have been doped in this season throughout with steroids.

Origin of the name

The Cardinals name goes back to a reporter who described it in the 90s of the 19th century, the players with the sentence " Wearing red, cardinal red". It is not known today whether he was referring to the mental representatives or the bird, because even the term "cardinal red", which was renamed St. Louis Cardinals in 1900 had the effect established. Since 1922, therefore, also adorns the Northern Cardinal, the uniform of the players.
