Thai highway network

The expressway network in Thailand includes the highways throughout Thailand. Is responsible for the road network both the Thruway Department ( in English usage: Department of Highways, short DOH, Thai: กรม ทางหลวง - Krom Thang Luang ) and the Highway Department ( Department of Rural Roads, in short: DORR, Thai: กรม ทางหลวง ชนบท - Krom Thang Luang Chonnabot ), both departments are under the Thai Ministry of Transport. On the highways in Thailand, the left-hand traffic is prescribed.

Public highways ( Thai: ทางหลวง - thang luang ) are simply called " streets " ( Thai: ถนน หลวง - Thanon Luang ) called, especially if they lead through urban areas. Thailand's highways have a total length of over 60,000 kilometers.

Most Thai highways are two lanes open to traffic and often have a hard shoulder, hard shoulder called. Multi-lane roads have periodically so-called "U- Turns" ( German: semi-circle turn ) and traffic light controlled intersections, which slow the flow of traffic. These lanes are comparable to those in the UK "Dual Carriageway ". They are also divided highways in Thailand called, in which the two carriageways are separated. In many local through traffic and at some intersections, there are parallel to the lanes on each side of the slip road ( Frontage Road). The speed limit is city 50 km / h out of town 90 km / h

Due to increasing registrations of motor vehicles and a need for high-speed roads with limited access, the Thai Government issued in 1997 a Cabinet decision, in which a master plan for the construction of motorways has been set. Of these some sections of highways were designated as motorway yet.

Types of highways

The Highway Act of 1992 ( English: 1992 Highway Act, Thai: พระราชบัญญัติ ทางหลวง พ.ศ. 2535 ), in 2006 than in 2006 Highway Act ( พระราชบัญญัติ ทางหลวง ( ฉบับ ที่ 2) พ.ศ. 2549 ) revised defines the following six types of highways in Thailand:

  • Highway ( ทางหลวง พิเศษ ), ( English: motorway ) is a highway for high traffic volume, which is applied for fast moving traffic. The DOH ( Department of Highways ) provides for the construction, extension, maintenance and repair.
  • National highway ( ทางหลวง แผ่นดิน ) is a national road which regions, provinces, counties, and other important places together. Again, the DOH ( Department of Highways ) provides for the construction, extension, maintenance and repair.
  • Rural Expressway ( ทางหลวง ชนบท ) is a highway outside the cities, whose construction, extension, maintenance and repair of the DRR ( Department of Rural Roads ) is performed.
  • Metropolitan Expressway ( ทางหลวง เทศบาล ) is an urban expressway whose construction, extension, maintenance and repair work is carried out by local Verwaltungsorganisatioen.
  • Special Expressway ( ทางหลวง สุขาภิบาล ) is a special high-speed road,
  • Concession highway ( ทางหลวง สัมปทาน ) is an expressway, an approval of the Government has been granted for a private investor. This has been granted only twice. For the 14.7 km long expressway 3246 and the 15 -kilometer long highway 4055 Meanwhile, both licenses but expired.

Numbering of highways

The numbering with single digit stands for the region of Thailand, where the road runs mainly:

  • Highways, whose number starts with 1, located in Northern Thailand,
  • Highways, whose number starts with 2, located in northeast Thailand,
  • Highways, whose number starts with 3, lie in Central and Eastern Thailand, and in the northern part of Southern Thailand,
  • Highways, whose number starts with 4, located in the south of Thailand.

Number of digits

An enumeration with only a single-digit number represents a major highway that connects Bangkok with the other four regions:

  • Route 1 ( Thanon Phahonyothin ), Northern Thailand,
  • Route 2 ( Thanon Mittraphap ), northeast Thailand,
  • Route 3 ( Thanon Sukhumvit ), Eastern Thailand,
  • Route 4 ( Thanon Phetkasem ), Southern Thailand.

A two-digit number represents a major highway in the various regions. For example, the Thailand Route 22, the main compound in the northeast, which connects the province of Udon Thani province of Nakhon Phanom with.

A three-digit number represents a minor highway. For example, 202 combines a street in the North East, Chaiyaphum and Khemarat the route; Route 314, a street in the central region between Bang Pakong and Cha Choeng Sao.

A four-digit number represents streets within a province which either connects the provincial capital with the other Landkreisesn or roads to important towns in the province. For example, the 1001 route a highway in the northern region, which runs from the junction of Route 11 to Amphoe Phrao; Route 4006 is a street in the southern region, which runs between the junction of Route 4 ( Ratchakrut ) and Lang Suan.
