Vovchansk

Wowtschansk (Ukrainian Вовчанськ; Russian Волчанск / Volchansk ) is a city in eastern Ukraine and the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons in the north of Kharkiv Oblast with about 18,300 inhabitants ( 2013).

Geography

Wowtschansk lies on both banks of the Wowtscha, which flows just outside the town in the Donets. The city is located directly around 75 km north-east of Oblastzentrums Kharkiv on the Ukrainian- Russian border and has a station on the railway line Belgorod- Kupjansk.

Still belongs to the municipality of the settlement Pleteniwka (Ukrainian Плетенівка ) with 124 inhabitants.

History

The place is first mentioned by the name Wowtschi Vody (Ukrainian Вовчі Води ) in 1688 writing and was one of the first settlements of the Sloboda Ukraine. 1780 was the place as a result of an administrative reform the status of a city and its present name. In the 19th century the city was the administrative center of Ujesd Wowtschansk in the government of Kharkov. The city was occupied on 10 June 1942 by troops of the Wehrmacht and freed in August 1943 by troops of the Red Army.

Founded in 1923 and managed by Wowtschansk from Rajon Wowtschansk has an area of ​​1888.1 km ² and a population of about 48,000 inhabitants. In the north of Rajon borders the Russian Belgorod Oblast. The population density is 25 inhabitants of Rajon per km ².
