We Are the World 25 for Haiti

Artists for Haiti (German: Artists for Haiti) is a charity project to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti on 12 January 2010. 85 mainly American musicians came together for it and took the song We Are the World 25 for Haiti. The song is a cover version of 1985 published song We Are the World, which was written by American musicians Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and was then brought out under the name USA for Africa as a charity song for the famine in Africa.

Background

Originally wanted to Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones at the end of 2009, ie 25 years after the Africa Project, a newly edited version of the original song under the title "Live 25 " release, but it was agreed that, without re-recording the song with new artists in the hope he would reach even the younger generations, thereby contributing to help the people of Haiti.

The song was recorded on 1 February 2010 in fourteen hours and with more than eighty artists in the studio, in which the original was recorded. The recordings were held after the award of the Grammys, as the music world had gathered for the occasion in Los Angeles. On February 12, during the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, the song was released. We Are the World 25 for Haiti was released as a single CD and as a digital download.

We Are the World 25 for Haiti is musically very similar in structure to We Are the World, but contains in addition to Auto-Tune also several rap verses, which were written by some participating hip- hop artists. Michael Jackson died months before the release of the song, but the material was cut from 1985 to request his mother Katherine in the song, and especially in the music video. His younger sister Janet sings in two voices with his voice from the recording of 1985 and his nephews Taj, TJ and Taryll ( collectively known as 3T) accompany Jackson's voice in the chorus.

We Are the World 25 for Haiti received very mixed reviews from contemporary music commentators. In addition to criticism, which refers to the added parts of the song, including the absence of many stars was criticized. Ironically, the biggest stars of the Grammys Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Jay -Z, Alicia Keys and Justin Timberlake had not involved out of respect for the original, as it is called in the project. This also explains why reached the song different from the original 25 years earlier, only # 2 on the U.S. charts and was out already fallen out of the Top 10 after two weeks. Internationally, the song was only a few exceptions far less attention than the version of USA for Africa. There were also in many countries also support projects with national artists, for example Helping Haiti in the UK or Young Artists for Haiti in Canada that were successful there.
