Žirany

Žirany (Hungarian Zsére ) is a Slovak parish in Okres Nitra Region and in Nitriansky with 1349 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011).

Geography

The municipality is located in the northwest part of Hillsbrad Žitavská pahorkatina the creek Hunták, below the mountains Tribetz. The center is located at an altitude of 250 m nm and is 12 kilometers away from Nitra.

Neighboring municipalities are Jelenec the north and east, in the southeast Kolíňany, Štitáre in the south, the west and Podhorany Bádice in the northwest.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1113 in the Zoborská documents as Sire writing and belonged to the monastery on Zobor. 1349, he was devastated, according to the records and shortly thereafter probably resettled. From 1360 to 1848 the village was in the subjects relationship with the Diocese of Nitra. There was a wine-making tradition and the wine was even delivered to the Graner chapter. Since the 15th century there are lime kilns in the 18th century recorded one 16 furnaces. 15th century 1828 were counted 112 houses and 781 inhabitants, who were employed in agriculture and lime kiln.

Until 1918, belonged to the lying in the county Neutra place the Kingdom of Hungary and came after Czechoslovakia or Slovakia today.

Population

According to the 2011 census lived in Žirany 1,355 inhabitants, of whom 669 Slovaks, 636 Hungarians, Czechs and seven two poles. 41 inhabitants did not respond. 1,198 residents pleaded with the Roman Catholic Church, six residents of the Greek Catholic Church, the Evangelical Church of the five residents and two residents of the Reformed Church; ten inhabitants were of a different denomination. 48 residents were non-denominational and 86 inhabitants, the denomination is not determined.
