- February: Typee by Herman Melville first appears under the name of Narrative of a Four Months ' Residence among the Natives of a Valley of the Marquesas Islands.
- The final parts of the current since 1844 serialized novel Le Comte de Monte- Cristo ( The Count of Monte Cristo ) by Alexandre Dumas appear in the magazine Le Journal des débats.
