- The building, designed by William Henry Playfair building of the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh is opened.

- MAY 21: On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Aspern designed by Anton Dominik Fernkorn Lion of Aspern Aspern is unveiled at the Heldenplatz.

- Édouard Manet has begun the year before his work at The Absinthe Drinker the two -yearly Salon de Paris. The picture is, however, rejected by the jury, only Eugène Delacroix speaks out for inclusion in the exhibition.
- Jean -François Millet completed after three years of work, the image of L' Angelus ( The Angelus ).

- After sketches of his travels to South America Frederic Edwin Church made the painting The Heart of the Andes. In the same year he rents - impressed by reports on the exploration of the North Sea, particularly through the spectacularly failed Franklin expedition to discover the Northwest Passage - with Louis Legrand Noble a ship to sketch icebergs in the North Atlantic between Labrador and Greenland.
- The American artist Eastman Johnson painted his most famous work Negro Life at the South.

Museums and exhibitions
The Palazzo del Bargello in Florence is converted into a museum, so that the city can accommodate the sculptures of the Renaissance, which find no place in the Uffizi Gallery. In the Bargello the fact is one of the most important sculpture collection in the world with works by Michelangelo, Donatello, Cellini, Giovanni Bologna, Baccio Bandinelli, Vincenzo Danti and Tino di Camaino. The museum also has a very extensive coin collection, a collection of weapons and armor, as well as miniatures.
