Architecture
- The architect August Weber completed the horticulture building on the Ringstrasse.
- In Dusseldorf start on plans by Ludwig Blank the construction of the social and hard house for the artist club paintbox.
Sculpture
- Auguste Rodin breaks with The Man with the Broken Nose with the ideal of beauty salon art. The work is from the Paris Salon rejected.
Painting
- 6 February to 12 July: Francis Bicknell Carpenter painted his most famous painting First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation Abraham Lincoln. During his work he receives from President Abraham Lincoln 's permission to live in the White House.
- The painting Oedipus and the Sphinx by Gustave Moreau was first issued in an official Paris Salon.
- Jean Jacques Henner painted The chaste Susanna.
- Henri Fantin -Latour painted in oil on canvas of a few of his group portraits: Hommage à Delacroix.
