Architecture

The architect August Weber begins with the construction of the Vienna Künstlerhaus.

Sculpture

Conceived by Anton Dominik Fernkorn and after his stroke, completed by his students equestrian statue of Prince Eugene in the Imperial Forum in Vienna, today's Heldenplatz is completed. The bodies come from Eduard van der Null. It is the counterpart to the 1860 unveiled statue of Archduke Karl, but does not reach its technical perfection, as also the tail of the horse touches the base.

Painting

France

The exhibition of Édouard Manet's Olympia in Paris salon leads to one of the biggest scandals in the history of art. Also, The Mocking of Christ is negatively received by the audience.
After the failure of his painting Medieval battle scene at the Paris Salon Edgar Degas turned away from history painting. He portrays the result primarily with contemporary scenes of Parisian life.
Claude Monet began work on the painting The Luncheon on the Grass, which he will not finish.
