Architecture

  • April 4: Because of the devastating criticisms of the still in construction new building of the Vienna Court Opera, the architect Eduard van der Null takes life. His partner August Sicard von Sicardsburg dies a few weeks later, so that neither of the two architects witnessed the completion of the building in 1869.
  • MAY 16: The construction of the Národní Divadlo in Prague begins. Josef Zítek is the architect of Neo-Renaissance building.
  • September 1: Build by August Weber Künstlerhaus Vienna is opened.

Painting

  • Pierre- Auguste Renoir Painting Summer shows the portrait of his mistress Lise Tréhot.
  • Édouard Manet paints the portrait of Mademoiselle Claus and starts the painting The Balcony.
  • The painter Rodolphe Julian founded in the 2nd arrondissement in Paris, the Art Academy Académie Julian.
  • Belgian artist founded the Société Libre des Beaux -Arts.
