- June 9: Charles Dickens ' last novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood ( The Mystery of Edwin Drood ) remains unfinished because the author died while working on the detective novel of a stroke.
- June: Jules Verne published the second volume of the novel Vingt mille sous les mers lieues (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ).
- The novella Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher- Masoch is published. It is part of his large-scale amendment cycle The Legacy of Cain, however, is not completed.
