- October: The American Louisa May Alcott publishes the incurred from May to July 's novel Little Women. Due to the surprising success it starts in November with working on a second part.
- The first volume of Jules Verne's novel Les Enfants du Capitaine Grant is published by Pierre -Jules Hetzel.
